An island in Lake Nicaragua formed by two volcanoes joined by an isthmus. Almost nobody goes.

Ometepe sits in Lake Nicaragua — two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, joined into a figure-eight island. It is the largest island in a freshwater lake anywhere, and it remains startlingly quiet.

What is there

Farmland, small villages, petroglyphs, and two very different volcanoes. Concepción is active, symmetrical and bare; Maderas is dormant, forested, and has a crater lake at the top.

The whole island is reachable by a single loop road, in poor repair on the Maderas side.

One concrete thing to do

Swim at Ojo de Agua — a spring-fed natural pool on the isthmus, walled and shaded, fed by filtered volcanic water. It is a fifteen-minute walk off the road and it is the best swim in Nicaragua. Go before ten to have it to yourself.

If you want the hard version instead: Maderas is a demanding eight-hour round trip, muddy, and requires a guide. The crater lake at the top is usually in cloud.

Getting there

Ferry from San Jorge, near Rivas — about an hour to Moyogalpa. Boats are weather-dependent and the crossing can be rough.

The honest caveat

Infrastructure is limited. Power cuts happen, ATMs are unreliable, and the road around Maderas will shake a small car apart. Bring cash.

Checked early 2026; confirm ferry times locally.
